Records & Research
Amanda Finch (born May 9, 1821 in Nova Scotia, Canada) was a daughter of George Finch and Elizabeth (Betsy) Pierce. She married Phineas Wright (1812-1874) in Canada, and their children included Sarah Adelia, Zenas Hovey, Elizabeth (Jane), and Phineas Wright. Identity is strongly anchored: online genealogy trees (Geni, FamilySearch Family Tree, GenoPro) match the family report on the exact birth date, both parents, the spouse, and all four children — an unambiguous multi-anchor match. Those same trees, however, record her death as January 1, 1848 at Voree, Racine County, Wisconsin, which conflicts with the family report's 1846 / Black River Falls; the trees are uncited and the Voree (Racine) location is also inconsistent with the family's documented 1842-1846 presence in western Wisconsin (Grant County), so the death date and place remain unresolved. No primary vital record (birth, marriage, or death) was located; all findings rest on online family trees.

Online genealogy trees record Amanda Finch's death as January 1, 1848 at Voree, Racine County, Wisconsin. likely
likely death.date: report “1846” vs. found “1848-01-01 (January 1, 1848)”. Geni and the FamilySearch Family Tree give 1 Jan 1848, two years later than the report's 1846. Based on uncited online trees only; no primary death record located. Unresolved.
likely death.place: report “Black River Falls, Wisconsin” vs. found “Voree, Racine, Wisconsin”. Trees place her death at Voree (Racine Co.), the early Strangite settlement in southeastern Wisconsin, vs Black River Falls (Jackson Co.) in the report. Both in Wisconsin. The report's location is supported by the family's documented presence in western Wisconsin (daughter Elizabeth b. 1842 Grant Co.; son Phineas b. 1846 Wisconsin) and husband Phineas being buried at Wrightsville, Jackson Co., near Black River Falls — which argues against the southeastern Voree location. Unresolved.
likely birth.place: report “Johnstown, Nova Scotia, Canada” vs. found “Cornwallis, Kings County, Nova Scotia, Canada”. Trees state Cornwallis/Kings County rather than Johnstown; both are in Nova Scotia. Her parents George Finch and Elizabeth Pierce married at Cornwallis Township, Kings Co., which is consistent with a Cornwallis birthplace, but this rests on uncited trees, not a primary birth/baptism record. Unresolved.
Open questions (6)
- No primary vital record (birth, marriage, or death) was located — all findings rest on online family trees (Geni, FamilySearch Family Tree, GenoPro). A Nova Scotia birth/baptism record (Cornwallis or Johnstown) and a Wisconsin death record are needed to resolve the 1846-vs-1848 date and the Black River Falls-vs-Voree place.
- The death date/place (1 Jan 1848 / Voree, Racine) conflicts with the report (1846 / Black River Falls) AND with the family's own documented geography: children born in Grant Co., Wisconsin (1842) and Wisconsin (1846), plus the husband's burial near Black River Falls in Jackson Co., point to western Wisconsin, not southeastern Voree. The Voree death therefore looks doubtful and should not be published as fact.
- The marriage date of 22 Jan 1836 (single uncited tree) is internally inconsistent with daughter Sarah Adelia's reported birth (1835 per the report / 1837 per a tree). The marriage date is not reliable and was downgraded; the spouse identity itself is sound.
- Search results mention an additional possible daughter, 'Alvina Malessa Wright,' not in the family report. Her existence and parentage are unconfirmed.
- The GenoPro tree lists two sons named 'Phineas' (one b. ~1836, one b. 1 Apr 1846); whether these are duplicate entries or two distinct children is unclear.
- The Geni and FamilySearch tree pages are JavaScript/login-gated and could not be read directly (the Geni page returned no extractable text); the underlying data is drawn from search-result snippets and should be verified by viewing the pages directly or, preferably, by locating primary records.
