Records & Research

James Whitley was born 24 October 1800 in Elizabeth(town) Township, Leeds County, Upper Canada (Ontario), the son of United Empire Loyalist John Whitley (~1760-1838) and Margaret Hagerman (1771-1845). As a child of a UEL of Elizabethtown, he is recorded in "The Loyalists in Ontario" (Reid) with an Order in Council land-grant date of 17 March 1824. His identity is confirmed on three independent anchors (birth date, father, mother), all agreeing with the known facts. A death of February 1842 (age 41) appears on his WikiTree profile but is explicitly unsourced ("Birth and death dates from online trees - no sources") and remains unconfirmed. His maternal grandparents are shown as John Hagerman UE (1747-1813) and Phoebe Ferguson (1750-1798).

Differs from the report

birth.place: report says “null (no place given)”, records indicate “Elizabeth(town) Township, Leeds County, Ontario, Canada (Upper Canada)”. Not a conflict — the report left birthplace blank; research adds it. Verified on James's WikiTree profile ('Elizabeth Township, Leeds, Ontario') and consistent with the 'Loyalists in Ontario' record placing the family 'of Elizabethtown.' wikitree ↗

Open questions (6)
  • James Whitley's death (Feb 1842, age 41) is recorded only from unsourced online trees on WikiTree (the profile itself states 'Birth and death dates from online trees - no sources'). It has been downgraded to 'unconfirmed.' A primary record (death/burial register, probate, or cemetery) is needed to confirm the date and to establish the death and burial place, both currently unknown.
  • The precise birth DAY (24 October) is likewise from unsourced online trees, not a record; only the person-identity (via father + mother + 1800 birth year + Elizabethtown family) is record-corroborated through the 'Loyalists in Ontario' land-grant list. A baptism or birth record would be needed to confirm the exact day.
  • No spouse or children are recorded for James Whitley on any source consulted; it is unknown whether he married. His UEL land grant (OC 17 March 1824) was as a son rather than via marriage, consistent with possibly being unmarried, but this is not established.
  • Father John Whitley's birth year is given as 'abt 1760' on WikiTree vs. 1761 in the report — minor and likely the same person; a primary source for John's birth would resolve it.
  • A Geni profile for John Whitley (1761-1838) exists (geni.com/people/John-Whitley/6000000004651687022) but could not be loaded; it may hold additional detail on James.
  • The maternal-grandparents' '1784 immigration / Elizabethtown land grants' context is from the linked John Hagerman UE profile and was not independently verified in this audit.
